Below is a scan of the second iteration of my zine, In The Pines. This issue focuses on waterways, and was inspired by a late afternoon walk I took this summer along the Mill River path, while I was staying on campus for my internship. I waded into the river, still slightly murky from recent rainfall, and thought about rivers and roads. I liked the idea of the river as a passageway, and pictured myself as a tiny leaf, floating down the current like a boat, wondering where I would end up.
These musings led to the creation of the second issue of in the pines, where I continued to explore the ability of waterways to connect disparate entities. I tied this into the connection between the work I was doing in the lab (water potential and drought resilience) and personal challenges from my life, namely the death of a family member earlier in the summer, and the flooding of my hometown during the first week of my internship. Completing the zine was cathartic, and also helped me synthesize to reflect on and synthesize the relationships between water and trees; how the movement of water in and outside of biological bodies can enhance or inhibit the way they work.
